This recipe has been adapted from the Starbucks At Home website. You can find the original recipe here.
Starbucks has recently published the recipe for their famous pumpkin spice lattes, including the recipe for the pumpkin spice syrup that makes the base for this delicious drink.
You can add this syrup to your favourite coffee or desserts for a kick of extra flavour.
This recipe makes enough syrup for about 10 pumpkin spice lattes. Your holiday season is sorted!
Ingredients in Pumpkin Spice Syrup
For the sugar syrup:
- White sugar & water: the combination of sugar and water gives you a basic 'sugar syrup' which is the base of pumpkin spice syrup. I use caster sugar (superfine sugar) because it dissolves more quickly, but you can use regular granulated white sugar too.
For the pumpkin spice flavour:
Make sure your spices are as fresh as possible for the best flavour. Spices have a shelf life of about 2 years, however will begin to lose their flavour and subtleties over time.
- Cinnamon sticks: using whole cinnamon sticks gives you an amazing earthy, spicy flavour which infuses deeply into the syrup.
- Ground cloves
- Ground ginger
- Ground ginger
- Ground nutmeg
- Pumpkin puree / canned pumpkin
- NOT pumpkin pie filling. Use canned pumpkin puree or find my recipe for homemade pumpkin puree here.
How to Make Pumpkin Spice Syrup
Making this syrup is an easy process and the hands-on time is minimal. For this recipe you will need:
- A medium saucepan
- A wooden spoon
- A jar OR glass bottle OR or air-tight container (at least 500 mL / 17 oz capacity)
- A small piece of cheesecloth / muslin
- A rubber band
All set? Let's go!
1. Combine the water and the sugar in a medium saucepan.
2. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture looks like Image 2.
3. Add all of your flavourings: the spices and pumpkin! Bring to a simmer and cook for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. The syrup will be very fragrant.
4. While the mixture is simmering, prepare your glass jar and your cheesecloth.
5. Place the cheesecloth over the mouth of the jar or bottle and press down slightly so it concaves. This will leave room for your syrup to sit and drip into the jar.
6. Pour the syrup carefully into the cheesecloth. You may only be able to fit a small amount of the syrup at one time.
7. Continue to keep pouring syrup as it drips until all of the syrup has been strained into the bottle. Dispose of the cheesecloth.
And now you have your very own syrup ready to use! Keep it stored in the fridge for up to 7 days.
